Anniversary
Alina
Nistor
The Lesbian Group was constituted in April 1999, with the help of Rebeca
Sevilla, who came here to help lesbians and bisexual women in ACCEPT to
organize and grow as a group within the association. An unprecedented number
of women participated in that meeting. Everybody agreed that the birth
of a lesbian group was needed, in order to increase lesbians’ visibility
in the homosexual minority.
We celebrate now a year from the date the group was constituted, and lesbians
have began acting. There are more of us; we are more mature, and we are
wiser. The year that passed enriched us with new experiences. We are more
willing to involve in activities organised by ACCEPT, as well as in ones
especially designated for and by us. Here is a brief account of our first
year:
-
We created Women’s Workshop, which takes place every Monday, between 18-20,
in the ACCEPT office. Within the workshop, we debate various issues, and
each of us can be herself – each of us can learn from others’ experience
or share her own experience. This activity is still in its beginning, but
we feel that the special bonding it creates will make it very successful,
in time.
-
As for the ACCEPT newsletter, lesbians have become more and more visible
here, too. Starting with this year, the Lesbian Group will provide monthly
articles on its activity, as well as general ones.
-
On the 11th of March 2000, the Lesbian Group organised a party in ACCEPT.
The party, which was designed by and for the lesbians, welcomed any ACCEPT
volunteer, irrespective of his/her sexual orientation, and was a celebration
of spring.
-
The Lesbian Group was involved in yet other events from outside the organisation:
the 2nd National Conference of Women’s NGOs in Romania and the presentation
of ACCEPT before FAPTE (Women’s Association for Positive Activities, Tolerance
and Education). On this occasions, we agreed upon co-operation projects
and established significant contacts, from which the entire association
can benefit.
-
Between 28-30th April 2000, the Group was invited to take part in the Millesbium
Festival, in Prague. The event includes women from the major lesbian organizations
in Eastern Europe and is a good opportunity for us to introduce ourselves,
to establish contacts and partnerships, to learn from the experience of
NGOs which are close to us not only geographically, but also in what concerns
legislation and mentalities.
-
Lesbians will involve in yet other gay/lesbian projects, organised by ACCEPT
(for example, in a project dedicated to the promotion of gay subculture).
We hope to finalise soon another project, exclusively designed for the
Lesbian Group.
-
Lesbian representatives will take special courses for non-governmental
organizations activists; by this, our group will hopefully become more
efficient and more useful in representing the minority of lesbians and
bisexual women.
April
9th, 1999. Four lesbians were constituting the Lesbian Group. For most
people, it was just an ordinary day. Maybe the beginning was hard and marked
by hesitations. This can’t stop me from believing in our lesbians’ strength
and ability. The strength to move forward and the ability to always find
resources and ideas, by which we can gain the place we actually deserve,
in the society.
Happy
anniversary, girls!
