The
ILGA Europe Conference Bucharest, 4-8 October 2000
Adrian Coman Executive Director of ACCEPT ACCEPT will be the host of the 22nd annual conference of ILGA-Europe (The European Region of the International Lesbian and Gay Association). The event will bring together dozens of representatives of lesbian and gay organisations from different European countries. In the same time with the conference, we will organise a seminary. Topics debated in both the conference and the seminary will refer to the movement for the defence of homo/bisexually-oriented people’s rights, in European countries. We will also approach general issues regarding homosexuality, in the perspective of the European Council’s policy and of the extension of the European Union. |
This will be the first international conference of this kind in Romania, and we hope that it will raise the visibility of sexual minorities in our country. In other words, this conference will hopefully help to the creation of a positive image of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people – as normal people, who are not trying to get more rights (or different rights) than heterosexuals. Thanks to this conference, Romanian journalists will have the unprecedented opportunity to interview dozens of gays and lesbians. Romanian politicians will be able to meet gay politicians from other European countries. Last but not least, Romanian gays and lesbians will see a kind of event they were only dreaming about – right here, in Bucharest. Hopefully, this experience will help them in the process of being themselves, of escaping from the “culture of fear” in which they live, and of giving up hiding themselves and their feelings – their most beautiful feelings.
We are looking forward for you to take part in this conference, to help organise it, to ask us for information – by phone or directly on the ACCEPT web site:
